Breakout Rooms
Breakout rooms allow you to split your Zoom meeting in up to 50 separate sessions. The meeting host can choose to split the participants of the meeting into these separate sessions automatically or manually, and can switch between sessions at any time. Breakout rooms are handy when you would like to put your attendees in different groups for group discussions or group projects. Breakout room participants have full audio, video, and screen share capabilities.
How to enable Breakout room
- Sign in to your Columbia Zoom account with this link here: Columbia Zoom Sign-in
- If you are using a Mailman Lecture account, sign in with this link here: Mailman lecture Sign-in
- Once you are signed in click on "Settings" tab on your left hand side.
- Scroll down to the "Breakout room" feature and enable.
- Now your Breakout room has been enabled.
How to use Breakout room
- Once joined the call as a Host or after you claim host click on the Breakout Rooms" button located meeting control bar.
- After doing so, you will be presented with the option to create a number of breakout rooms.
- You have the option to create a number of rooms, select the amount of breakout rooms you would like.
- Now you have the option to randomly assign attendees to different breakout groups, to do so click "Automatically".
- You also have the option to manually assign people in to breakout groups, to do so click "Manually".
- You have the option to create a number of rooms, select the amount of breakout rooms you would like.
- Then click "Create Rooms".
- you should be presented with a randomized group or the option to manually assign.
- To manually assign your breakout groups, hover your mouse over to the attendee's name then click "Assign". Or Hover your mouse over to the Breakout Room and click "Assign" and search for the attendee's name.
- You also have the ability to rename your Breakout Rooms, to do so hover your mouse over to the Breakout Room and click "Rename"
- You may also recreate your breakout rooms and to do so click "Recreate" button. Please note that when you recreate new breakout rooms, the existing breakout rooms will
- Now click "Open All Rooms" and your attendees will begin to transition to their breakout rooms.
- You may also broadcast a message to all attendees in the breakout rooms, to do so click "Broadcast a message to all".
- Then type your message and click "Broadcast".
- When you would like to end the breakout rooms, click "Close All Rooms"
- Once you clicked "Close All Rooms", all participants will be presented with a notification that they are given 60 seconds to leave their breakout rooms before automatically bringing them back to their Zoom meeting.
