Configure Student Printers on your Mac

This article is intended for students who need to set up their Mac devices to connect to the Student Printers located in Law School Buildings.

To configure the Student printers on your Mac you will have to Connect to the Columbia U Secure network. This is because the Student printers are only accessible through the CU Secure network. You'll also need Administrator Privileges on your Mac. You’ll get asked for your Mac’s login password to verify you have Admin privileges. Please follow the steps in the next sections to configure the Student Printers on your Mac:



Download and Install HP software

The HP software will allow for more print options and features. Please follow the steps listed to download and install the HP software on your Mac:

  1. Visit Apple’s Support page for the HP software:

  2. Click the Download button.

Click the Allow download option if prompted by your internet browser.

 

  1. On the Dock, click the Finder icon.

  2. Click your Downloads folder.

  3. Double-click the HewlettPackardPrinterDrivers.dmg file.

  4. Double-click the HewlettPackardPrinterDrivers.pkg file.

  5. Click the Continue button.

  6. Click the Continue button.

  7. Click the Agree button.

  8. Click the Install button.

  9. Enter your Mac’s Login Password and click the Install Software button.

  10. Click the Close button.

  11. Click the Move to Trash button.


Add Student Printers in William & June Warren Hall

There are two queues available; a Regular queue and a Color Queue on the 2nd floor. Please follow the steps to add both on your Mac:

  1. On the Menu Bar > Click the Apple menu icon.

  2. Click the System Settings… command.

  3. Click the Printers & Scanners setting.

  4. Click the Add Printer, Scanners, or Fax... button.

     

  5. Right-click the Add Printer Toolbar.

If the Advanced gear icon is visible in the Add Printer Toolbar, please move to Step: 11.

 

  1. Click the Customize Toolbar… option.

  2. Click and hold down the trackpad or mouse on the Advanced gear icon.

  3. Drag the Advanced gear icon over to the Add Printer Toolbar.

  4. Let go of the trackpad or mouse, to drop the Advanced gear icon into place.

  5. Click the Done button.

     

  6. Click the Advanced gear icon.

  7. Click the Type: drop-down menu. 

  8. Select the Windows printer via spoolss option.

  9. Under URL: enter:
    smb://lawstudprdps01.adcu.columbia.edu/WJHL_2FL_Printers

    Under Name: enter:
    WJHL_2FL_Printers

  10. Click the Use: drop-down menu.

  11. Click the Select Software… option.

  12. On the Printer Software search bar, enter: 806

  13. Click HP Laserjet M806 from the search list.



  14. Click the OK button.

  15. Click the Add button.

  16. Click the Duplex Unit checkbox.

  17. Click the Optional Tray: drop-down menu.

  18. Select the HP LaserJet 3500-sheet High-capacity Input Tray option.



  19. Click the OK button.

  20. WJHL_2FL_Printers will show up under the listed printers.

  21. Click the Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax... button.

  22. Click the Advanced gear icon.

  23. Click the Type: drop-down menu. 

  24. Select the Windows printer via spoolss option.

  25. Under URL: enter:
    smb://lawstudprdps01.adcu.columbia.edu/WJHL_2FL_Printer_COLOR

    Under Name: enter:
    WJHL_2FL_Printer_COLOR

  26. Click the Use: drop-down menu.

  27. Click the Select Software… option.

  28. On the Printer Software search bar, enter: 553

  29. Click HP Color Laserjet M553 from the search list.

  30. Click the OK button.

  31. Click the Add button.

  32. Select the Duplex Unit checkbox.

  33. Select the Tray 3 checkbox.

  34. Click the OK button.

  35. WJHL_2FL_Printer_COLOR will show up under the listed printers.


Add Student printers in Jerome Greene Hall

There are two queues available; a Regular queue and a Color Queue in the 3rd floor Mezzanine Computer and Printing Lab. Please follow the steps to add both on your Mac:

  1. On the Menu Bar > Click the Apple menu icon.

     

  2. Click the System Settings… command.

  3. Click the Printers & Scanners setting.

     

  4. Click the Add Printer, Scanners, or Fax... button.

  5. Right-click the Add Printer Toolbar.

    Under Name: enter:
    GRHL_3FLLAB

  10. Click the Use: drop-down menu.

  11. Click the Select Software… option.

     

  12. On the Printer Software search bar, enter: 806

  13. Click HP Laserjet M806 from the search list.

  14. Click the OK button.

  15. Click the Add button.

  16. Click the Duplex Unit checkbox.

  29. Click HP Color Laserjet M553 from the search list.

     

  30. Click the OK button.

  31. Click the Add button.

     

  32. Select the Duplex Unit checkbox.

     

  33. Select the Tray 3 checkbox.

  34. Click the OK button.

  35. GRHL_3FLLAB_COLOR will show up under the listed printers.
