We can do access through Canvas or directly through turnitin.com. Canvas is most useful for scanning documents when students submit assignments. If you are looking to scan several documents you already have then access through the website is easier. Please let me know which method you prefer (or both) and I can setup your access.

IntegrationINC1570067When you activate Turnitin for an assignment in Canvas, all student submissions are run through the scan. There is no way to selectively assign submissions to be scanned when others will not be. If you wish to take individual submissions and run them through Turnitin you would need to download the files and upload them directly at turnitin.com. If you wish to do this please let me know and I will setup an account for you there.

If you want to allow your students to upload draft versions of an assignment and run those through Turnitin that can set that up in Canvas. You would want two assignments, an ungraded one for the drafts setup with Turnitin, and the final graded one. In the Turnitin settings for the draft we would want to use the following settings.

Submit papers to - Do not store the submitted papers
Generate Similarity Reports for student submission - Generate reports immediately
Allow students to view Similarity Reports - Yes

This would allow the students to submit as many drafts as they need, view the Turnitin reports for their submission, and their drafts would not be saved to check against themselves avoiding false positive matches.

Because the new Turnitin integration is not an LTI tool but a works with a custom native resource within Canvas it does not appear in the Canvas LTI report.  The old LTI tool will so any courses with the old version of the tool installed will appear in the Canvas LTI Report.

Turnitin's reports can be confusing and often need to be referenced together to get an entire picture of what is going on.  Some guidelines:

  • To figure out which courses are using Turntin please use the by Class report.  The class name will have the title of the class.  If the Canvas Plagiarism Framework is being used this will match the title of the course in Canvas.  While it doesn't tell you directly which ones are from the integration or directly through the website, it is a good starting point.
  • The by Integration report will tell you how many courses are through the website (Native) or through both the new and old Canvas integration (LTI API).  Unfortunately it does not display which courses those are.
  • You can cross reference the two reports for a clearer picture of activity.  For instance for September I see 5 active classes for the LTI API integration.  In the by Class report I see 5 classes with submissions for September, all of which have a name that matches the standard Canvas naming convention.  This can give us a good picture of which courses are using the Canvas integration and pair them to the instructor.
  • The submissions numbers between the reports may not always line up.  Turnitin has not been able to give us a good explanation for this.

1. Canvas integration - Allows you to setup a Canvas assignment with Turnitin enabled. All submissions will be scanned in Turnitin and you can

2. Turnitin.com access - Allows you to setup a class and upload files through turnitin.com. This is best used if you have already gathered the files that need to be scanned.
