Connecting your computer to the Internet in the Law School.
Connecting to shared resources on the Law School IT network.
Configuring your Windows device with the services provided by the IT department.
Note on Support
The Law School IT Helpdesk supports most of your technology needs including:
Network Connectivity (both wired and wireless connections) in Law School buildings. This does not include dormitories or residential buildings.
Student Labs in Jerome Greene Hall.
Web-based tools that the university provides (such as CourseWorks and LawNet).
The following software is supported:
Windows 11
Windows 10
macOS
Microsoft Office 365
Microsoft Office for Mac 2021 and 2019
Google Workspace applications
The Law School IT helpdesk does not perform hardware repair. We can help you troubleshoot and find a third-party service provider that is certified by the manufacturer to perform hardware service repair.
System Requirements
To gain access to technology services offered by the Law School, you must have the following:
A UNI account.
A Windows device running Windows 11, version 22H2 and above. Only genuine versions of the Windows Operating system are supported.
Turn on Windows update to ensure you have the latest security patches installed.
A security program that provides real-time protection and actively scans your Windows device for malicious threats.
Connect to secure Wi-Fi
This article is intended for use by students who need to setup their Windows devices to connect to the Internet.
Connect to Columbia U Secure
Students are encouraged to connect to the Columbia U Secure network. Columbia U Secure uses a secure connection to internet access points. Learn more about the Columbia U Secure network. Please follow the steps below to join the Columbia U Secure network on your Windows device:
From the taskbar, right-click the Start button.
Click the Network Connections shortcut.
Click the Wi-Fi settings option.
Click the Show available networks link.
Select the Columbia U Secure Wi-Fi network.
Select the Connect automatically checkbox.
Click the Connect button.
Enter YourUNI and password.
Click the OK button.
Click the Connect button.
In just a few moments you will be connected to the Columbia U Secure network.
Click the Close button.
Windows Updates
This article is intended for use by students who would like to setup Windows updates on their Windows device.
Microsoft releases updates often. These updates are for the hardware, software, and security of your Windows device. Please follow the steps to enable the recommended Windows update settings:
From the taskbar, click the Start button.
Click the Settings shortcut.
Select the Windows update shortcut.
Select Advanced options.
Turn on the Receive updates for other Microsoft Products switch.
Scroll down, click the Delivery Optimization option.
Turn off the Allow downloads from other PCs switch.
Select the Windows update shortcut.
Click the blue Check for updates button.
Select the Close button.
Configure Virtual Private Network (VPN)
This article is intended for use by students who need to set up their Windows devices with Columbia VPN.
Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a service that allows you to connect to the Columbia network via an encrypted tunnel. VPN essentially simulates you being on campus without physically being here. To use the Columbia VPN service you will have to set up Duo MFA with your UNI identity. Duo MFA is required to access Columbia VPN services.
Requirement:
Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Authentication is the process of proving your identity during the login process. Two-factor authentication adds an additional proof of identification. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) layers multiple methods of identification for greater security.
Duo is a tech company that provides identity and access management solutions. Duo's MFA system is what is currently being used at Columbia University.
Duo MFA can use three methods of identification to validate your UNI identity. Those methods are:
Push notifications sent through the Duo mobile device app
An automated phone call.
One-time use passcodes.
Install the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client
We will use the Push notification method to download and install the Cisco Anyconnect app. Please follow the steps to install the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client on your Windows device:
Visit the Columbia VPN Portal:

Username: YourUNI
Password: YourUniPassword
Duo Action: pushClick the Login button.
Tap the checkmark to approve the login request from your mobile device.
Click the AnyConnect link.
Click the Start AnyConnect link.
Click the Download for macOS button.
You may get a prompt from your internet browser asking to Allow the download.
From the taskbar, right-click the Start button.
Click the File Explorer shortcut.
Click your Downloads folder.
Double-click the anyconnect-win-4.10.04071-core-vpn-... file to start the installation.
Click the Next button.
Click the I accept the terms in the License Agreement radio button.
Click the Next > button.
Click the Continue button.
Click the Yes button.
Click the Install button.
Connect to Columbia VPN for the first time.
You have to connect one time so that your Windows device can save the server address. Please follow the steps to connect to Columbia VPN:
From the taskbar, right-click the Start button.
Select the Search shortcut.
In the Search field, enter: Cisco
Click the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client app.
In the text field, enter: vpn.cc.columbia.edu
Click the Connect button.
Enter:
Username: YourUNI
Password: YourUniPassword
Second Password: pushClick the OK button.
Tap the checkmark to approve the login request from your mobile device.
From the taskbar, right-click the Start button.
In the Search field, enter: Cisco
Click the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client app.
Click the Disconnect button to end the VPN session.
Malwarebytes security software
This article is intended for use by students who need to setup their Windows devices with Malwarebytes.
Malwarebytes is a security program that protects your Windows device from malicious threats. Law School students are entitled to (1) free premium license, for one (1) Mac of your choice. The license needs to be validated every 12 months.
Configure Malwarebytes
Please follow the steps to configure Malwarebytes on your Windows device:
Visit the CUIT Security Downloads website.

Enter YourUNI email address.
Click the Claim Malwarebytes License button.
Enter YourUNI and password.
Click the LOGIN button.
Click the Send me a Push button.
Tap the checkmark to approve the login request from your mobile device.
Click the Download button.
Your internet browser will prompt you to Allow the download.From the taskbar, right-click the Start button.
Click the File Explorer shortcut.
Click your Downloads folder.
Double-click the MbSetup.exe file to start the installation.
Click the Yes button.
Click the Install button.
Click the Me or my family option.
Click the Next button.
Click the Skip this for now link.
Malwarebytes Browser Guard extension may block legitimate third party software. It is recommended to skip the installation to avoid issues in the future.Click the Done button.
Click the Get started button
Click the Close button.
Visit the CUIT Security Downloads website.

Click the Malwarebytes link.
Enter YourUNI email address.
Click the Claim Malwarebytes License button.
Click the Activate button.
Click the Allow option
Click the Send me a Push button.
Click the Activate button.
Your internet browser will prompt you to allow the Malwarebytes Assistant to open.
Click the Done button.
Setup Network Drives
This article is intended for use by students who need to setup their Windows devices to connect to the G and H drives.
Network drives are storage devices connected to an IT network. The same way that a flash drive connects to your computer-the network drives are connected to the Law School network. You will have to connect to the Columbia U Secure network to access the Network Drives. The network drives are only accessible within the Law School buildings through the Columbia U Secure network for security purposes. If you would like to connect to the network drives from off campus, you will have to connect to Columbia VPN to simulate that you are on campus.
G Drive
The G drive is the name for the shared drive on the Law School IT network. Faculty, Staff, and Students all collaborate on the G drive. Folder access is granted by system administrators. Please follow the steps to connect the G drive to your Windows device:
On the taskbar, right-click the Start button.
Click the File Explorer shortcut.
Right-click the This PC shortcut.
Select the Show more options command.
Select the Map network drive... command.
Select the G Drive letter, from the drop-down menu.
In the Folder: text field, enter: \\lawsfprdfs01.adcu.columbia.edu\Groups
Deselect the Reconnect at sign-in checkbox.
Click the Finish button.
Enter:
Name: adcu\YourUNI
Password: YourUniPasswordClick the Remember my credentials checkbox.
Click the blue OK button.
Click the This PC shortcut.
Right-click the new Groups network drive.
Click the Show more options command.
Click the Create shortcut option.
Click the Yes button.
Right-click the newly created Groups shortcut located on your desktop.
Select the Show more options command.
Select the Rename command.
Enter: G Drive and press the Return key on your keyboard.
Use this shortcut to access the G Drive.
H Drive
The H drive is your personal space on the network. Only you have access to your H drive. We recommend saving your files to the H drive if you do not already have a secure storage space for your files. Contents of the H drive are saved every night. Please follow the steps to connect the H drive to your Windows device:
On the taskbar, right-click the Start button.
Click the File Explorer shortcut.
Right-click the This PC shortcut.
Select the Show more options command.
Select the Map network drive... command.
Select the H Drive letter, from the drop-down menu.
In the Folder: text field, enter: \\lawprdfs02.adcu.columbia.edu\Students
Deselect the Reconnect at sign-in checkbox.
Click the Finish button.
Enter:
Name: adcu\YourUNI
Password: YourUniPasswordClick the Remember my credentials checkbox.
Click the blue OK button.
Click the This PC option.
Right-click the new Students network drive.
Select the Show more options command.
Click the Create shortcut option.
Click the Yes button.
Right-click the newly created Students shortcut located on your desktop.
Select the Show more options command.
Select the Rename command.
Enter H Drive and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
Use this shortcut to access your H Drive.
Configure the Student Printers
This article is intended for use by students who need to setup their Windows 11 devices to print to the Student Lab Printers.
After accessing the student print server. Your Windows device will download and install printer software and settings. After the printers are setup you will be able to see the Student Lab printers available from your programs. Please follow the steps to configure the Student Lab Printers on your Windows device.
From the taskbar, right-click the Start button.
Click the File Explorer shortcut.
In the Address bar, enter:
\\lawstudprdps01.adcu.columbia.edu
and press the Enter key on your keyboard.Enter:
User Name: adcu\YourUNI
Password: YourUniPasswordSelect the Remember my credentials checkbox.
Click the OK button.
Double-click the WJHL_2FL_Printers print queue.
Click the Yes button.
Select the Close button.
Double-click WJHL_2FL_Printer_COLOR print queue.
Click the Yes button.
Select the Close button.
Double-click the GRHL_3FLLAB print queue.
Select the Close button.
Double-click the GRHL_3FLLAB_COLOR print queue.
Select the Close button.
