Disabling Hardware Acceleration in Zoom

Objective: 

  • To provide CUIT customers with a way to address system instability and application crashes caused by Zoom meetings.

Target Audience:

  • For all CUIT customers who are experiencing frequent application crashes or performance issues during Zoom meetings.

Prerequisites:

  • Zoom desktop application installed on your computer.

  • Issues with Zoom crashing.

    • This guide is to help address problems with computer performance during Zoom meetings. If you’re not experiencing similar issues, this guide may not be necessary for you.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open Zoom settings by clicking on your profile icon (top right) and then click settings

  1. Begin searching for “Hardware Acceleration”. Two options should be available and we’ll need to disable options in both tabs.

  1. In the “Video hardware acceleration settings” tab, toggle off all options under performance:
    - Receiving video
    - Sending video
    - Video processing

  1. In the “Use hardware acceleration (Advanced screen share)” tab, toggle off all options under Use hardware acceleration for:
    - Screen sharing
    - Video sharing
    - Annotations
